CILIUM

Cilium is an organelle of movement or reception in animal cells and some of plant cells.

The structure of mobile cilia and mechanism of their movement are similar to those of flagellum, but a cilium, as a rule, is shorter (5 to 10 micron) and has one basal body in its basis. Cilia usually move pendulously. Vibration of cilia in multiciliate cells is well coordinated, and it allows them to create a flow of water or mucus, or to move the animal or the cell.

Immovable cilia are an important part of receptive cells.
