OXIDOREDUCTASES

Oxidoreductases are a family of ferments, which catalyze oxidation-reduction reactions. Oxidoreductases play an important role in providing cells with energy. According to the character of the groups, which are oxidized, oxidoreductases are divided into classes: the ones active for the alcoholic group, for the aldehyde or ketone group, for the ethyl group, etc. NAD, NADF, cytochromes, kinones and other types of compounds act as acceptors of electrons or protons. The main classes of oxidoreductases, according to mechanisms of oxidation, are: dehydrogenases, oxidases, peroxidases, hydroxylases and oxygenases. Over 200 oxidoreductases are known.
