INHIBITOR

Inhibitors are substances of different natures. They suppress catalytic activity of enzymes or enzyme systems. Their effect is opposite to the effect of catalysts. Inhibitors take part in metabolic control. They slow down or hold up certain metabolic processes. Inhibitors can be reversible or irreversible. Reversible inhibitors are subdivided into 3 types: competitive, noncompetitive, and competition-free ones.

In a broader sense, the term "inhibitor" is used to designate substances, which restrain different biological processes (like, for example, growth of plants).
