Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is a system of smooth intracellular membranes. Many enzymes (in particular, oxydases), which catalyze reactions of detoxication of toxic substances, are located in this organelle. Besides this, synthesis of lipids and hydrolytic decomposition of glycogen (glycogenolysis) take place on the membranes of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
